General Skilled Migration Program
To be eligible for Australia’s General Skilled Migration (GSM) program, applicants must be working in an occupation listed on one of the designated occupation lists:
- The Medium and Long-Term Skilled Occupation List (MLTSSL);
- the Short-Term Skilled Occupation List (STSOL), or
- the Regional Occupation List (ROL).
The GSM uses a points-based assessment system to evaluate candidates, allocating points across criteria such as age, English language competency, educational qualifications, professional experience, and other attributes. These attributes may include the completion of an Australian qualification, prior study in a regional Australian area, proficiency in a community language and claiming the skilled experience of your spouse.
This system aims to prioritize high-calibre migrants who align with Australia’s economic and demographic needs. Legislative guidelines define both a minimum pass mark and a competitive pool mark, which act as a threshold to regulate the selection process, ensuring skilled migration aligns with national priorities.
